Dog Leads, Harnesses & Walking Gear

Leads & Harnesses

Everyday leads, retractable leashes for large dogs, portable water bottles and waste scoopers — the short list of things that actually come with you on a walk.

Harness or collar for walking?

A harness spreads pressure across the chest instead of the throat, which matters for dogs that pull and for flat-faced breeds like pugs and French bulldogs. A flat collar is fine for a dog that walks on a loose lead and is the right place for council registration and ID tags.

Lead length and retractable leads

A fixed 1.2–1.8m lead gives you control on footpaths and is what most Australian councils expect in public. Retractable leads suit open parks and beaches where a strong dog can range further — lock the brake before crossing roads, and choose a model rated above your dog's body weight.

Summer walk kit

Australian pavement gets hot enough to burn paw pads. Walk early or late, press the back of your hand to the footpath for five seconds first, and carry a folding travel bottle so your dog can drink on the way rather than waiting until home.

Walk — common questions

What size dog lead should I buy?
Match the clip and webbing weight to your dog: lightweight leads for dogs under 15kg, wider webbing and a heavy-duty clip for anything over 25kg or dogs that pull.
Are retractable leads safe?
They're best in open space, not on busy footpaths. Use the lock function near roads and other dogs, and pair with a harness so a sudden run doesn't jolt your dog's neck.
