How to size a dog harness
Harness sizing runs off chest girth, not weight. Measure the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs, with a soft tape held snug but not tight, then check that measurement against the size chart on the product page. Measure the neck as well for step-in and vest styles. If you land between two sizes, take the larger one and tighten the straps in — a harness should let two fingers slide flat underneath every strap.
Harness or collar for walking?
A harness spreads pressure across the chest instead of the throat, which matters for dogs that pull and for flat-faced breeds like pugs and French bulldogs. Front-clip harnesses turn a pulling dog back towards you, so they suit training walks; back-clip styles are easier on calm walkers. A flat collar is still the right place for council registration and ID tags.
Lead length and retractable leads
A fixed 1.2–1.8m lead gives you control on footpaths and is what most Australian councils expect in public. Retractable leads suit open parks and beaches where a strong dog can range further — lock the brake before crossing roads, and choose a model rated above your dog's body weight.
Summer walk kit
Australian pavement gets hot enough to burn paw pads. Walk early or late, press the back of your hand to the footpath for five seconds first, and carry a folding travel bottle so your dog can drink on the way rather than waiting until home.
