10 Must-Have Dog Accessories
Every list of dog "essentials" seems to run to forty items. This one doesn't. These are the ten pieces our team, and the vets and trainers we buy from, reach for every single week — with what to look for, and what quietly wastes your money.

1. A properly sized bed
Measure your dog nose-to-tail while they're stretched out and add 15–20cm. Bolstered beds suit dogs who curl and lean; flat mats suit sprawlers and hot sleepers. Removable, machine-washable covers are non-negotiable.

A front-clip harness redirects pulling without pressure on the throat — far safer than a collar for dogs who lunge. Check you can slide two fingers under every strap.

Fast eaters swallow air, which means bloating and reflux. A maze or ridged bowl stretches a meal from 30 seconds to several minutes and doubles as low-effort enrichment.

Match the toy to the chewer: plush for gentle mouths, solid rubber for power chewers. Replace anything cracked or small enough to swallow.

Ten minutes of nose work tires a dog more than a short walk. Rotate two or three puzzles so novelty doesn't wear off.

Even microchipped dogs need a visible tag. Choose a flat collar with a strong D-ring and a colourfast, quick-dry webbing if you're near water or sand.

Slicker brushes for double coats, rubber curry for short coats, undercoat rake for heavy shedders. Two minutes daily beats an hour once a month.

Small, soft, high-value and low-calorie. Keep a pouch by the door so good behaviour gets paid immediately.

Loose dogs in cars are a hazard in every Australian state. A crash-tested carrier for small dogs or a harness-to-seatbelt tether for larger ones is essential.
